The Sansom Endowment Fund honours the life and legacy of John Sansom (1927–2017), a dedicated educator whose career in teaching spanned more than four decades and four countries.
Born in Wimborne, England, John served in the Royal Navy before pursuing a career in education. His passion for learning and commitment to students took him from England to Nigeria, Sweden, and ultimately Canada. In 1961, John and his wife Irene immigrated to Canada and, after several years in Alberta and Sicamous, settled permanently in Salmon Arm in 1969.
For twenty-one years, John taught within School District No. 83, first at Eagle River School in Sicamous and later at Shuswap Junior Secondary. He was a respected colleague and educator who believed in building meaningful connections with students and supporting them as individuals.
John had a lifelong love of learning, travel, technology, and reading, but family and education remained at the heart of his life. The Sansom Endowment Fund continues his commitment to learning by providing annual scholarship support for students attending Okanagan College, helping future generations pursue their educational goals.
