The Class of ’77 – David MacKay Memorial Endowment honours the memory of David George MacKay, a lifelong resident of Salmon Arm whose family roots in the community date back to the early twentieth century.
Born and raised in Salmon Arm, David was the eldest of three children of Glen and Molly MacKay. He attended South Canoe Elementary School, Shuswap Junior Secondary School, and Salmon Arm Senior Secondary School, graduating in 1977.
Known for his outgoing personality, quick wit, and sense of humour, David was well-liked by classmates and friends. He enjoyed a wide range of activities, including hockey, baseball, tennis, and chess. He also served with the local Rocky Mountain Rangers militia unit and participated in security operations during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
An exceptional student with a particular talent for the sciences, David earned provincial scholarship honours in algebra, physics, and chemistry. Following graduation, he was preparing to begin engineering studies at the University of British Columbia. Tragically, his life was cut short in a waterskiing accident near Pierre’s Point during the BC Day long weekend in the summer of 1977.
In recognition of his achievements and character, David’s classmates and family established the David MacKay Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a graduating student who demonstrates excellence in the sciences. The Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association also honours his legacy through the David MacKay Memorial Trophy, presented to a U17 recreational player—or players—who exemplify perseverance and sportsmanship throughout the hockey season.
Though his life was brief, David’s kindness, friendship, and positive influence continue to be remembered by those who knew him, and his legacy lives on through the students and young athletes supported in his name.
