The Ron and Catherine Lee Endowment honours two lifelong educators and community members whose lives were defined by learning, service, family, and a deep commitment to helping others.
Ron Lee was born in Powell River, British Columbia, in 1937. After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1961, he devoted 35 years to public education as a teacher, counsellor, and administrator. Throughout his career in communities including Fort St. John, Courtenay, Vernon, Sicamous, and Salmon Arm, he worked with students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. He was particularly passionate about teaching mathematics, social studies, and civics, encouraging young people to understand their role as engaged and responsible citizens.
Catherine Lee was born in Trail, British Columbia, to Italian immigrant parents. Despite beginning school with little English, she developed a lifelong love of learning and academic excellence, becoming her high school valedictorian before earning an English degree from the University of British Columbia in 1961. She taught in the public school system before later serving as office manager at Ujimoto Optometry in Salmon Arm, where she became known for her exceptional care and personal approach.
Both Ron and Catherine were devoted to their community and shared a love of literature, history, the arts, music, and lifelong learning. They were active participants in community life and believed strongly in the value of education, service, and civic engagement.
Through this endowment, their legacy continues to support future generations, reflecting the values that guided their lives and the lasting contributions they made to their community.
