The Dr. Lee and Jos Penner Family Endowment honours the life, service, and community spirit of Dr. Lee Penner and his family.
Born in Rudgwick, England, on October 15, 1943, Lee immigrated to Canada as an infant and grew up in Saskatchewan. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Genetics before pursuing medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, where he graduated with distinction and received the Paediatric Medal from his graduating class. He continued postgraduate training in pediatrics and anesthesiology before choosing a career in family medicine.
In 1970, Dr. Penner moved to Salmon Arm, where he practiced medicine for 37 years, caring for generations of families and becoming a respected and familiar presence in the community. He also served as a UBC Clinical Professor, mentoring medical students interested in rural practice. Following his retirement from full-time practice, he continued to serve communities across British Columbia as a locum physician and later as a Medical Representative on the Canada Pension Plan Disability Tribunal.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lee was deeply devoted to his family and community. He and his wife, Jos, raised three sons and took great pride in their growing family, including their grandchildren. Known for his kindness, generosity, sense of humour, and calm presence, Lee touched countless lives through both his medical practice and his community involvement.
An avid boater, he particularly enjoyed time on Shuswap Lake and along the British Columbia coast. His legacy of service, compassion, and dedication continues through this endowment, supporting future generations within the community he called home for nearly four decades.
