The Fifth Avenue Seniors’ Activity Centre is a non-profit, registered society and charity. The Seniors’ Association was formally organized in 1948. In 2002 a new Centre was constructed to meet the active needs of a vibrant, growing seniors population. It is centrally located at 170 5th Avenue SE in Salmon Arm.
The Centre provides a friendly and welcome environment for all seniors from the area to meet, eat, socialize, and take part in a variety of recreational activities and services.
Seniors enjoy the lending library, singing, painting, fitness classes and line dancing. They play table tennis, floor curling, several different kinds of card games, pool, and darts to name a few of our activities. Our members aged 50 to 100 say they come for the activities but return for the social interactions, fun and friendships formed.
The Centre’s Fifth Avenue Café offers amazing low cost, nutritious lunch meals and is open to the public. Many of our single seniors particularly enjoy having a home cooked meal in a friendly place where they can make connections with others.
Regular special events include monthly birthday lunches and pancake breakfasts, occasional guest speakers and Christmas Dinner.
A secondary function is serving as an information and referral service helping to connect seniors with appropriate community agencies for specific needs.
The Centre also provides the community of Salmon Arm rental opportunities to support public and private events, particularly those of interest to seniors. Our auditorium with stage, commercial kitchen, dining room, and meeting room have several amenities to enhance rental experiences.
We train and rely on many, dedicated volunteers to offer the Activity Centre’s programs and services to over 800 members annually. The Fifth Avenue Seniors’ Activity Centre is managed and completely run by its elected board of directors with the help of volunteers in order to provide programs and services at the lowest possible cost.
The Endowment Fund was established in 2021. It provides a needed and reliable source of income to the Centre. By doing so the Centre can continue to provide and also increase valued, low cost services for seniors.
