The Lloyd and Joy Johnston Family Endowment honours two individuals whose lives were defined by service, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping others.
Joy Johnston was born in Prince Edward Island and began her career as a teacher before becoming a registered nurse. After moving to British Columbia, she met her future husband, Lloyd Johnston, who was serving with the RCMP. The couple married in 1954 and raised five sons while living in communities throughout British Columbia.
After returning to Salmon Arm in 1971, Joy resumed her nursing career at Shuswap Lake General Hospital, a profession she loved deeply. Following her retirement, she helped organize the Hospital Greeters program and continued volunteering at the hospital for many years. She remained actively involved in community life through organizations and activities including the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary, walking groups, dragon boating, exercise programs, and bridge clubs.
Joy was known for her energy, kindness, and genuine enjoyment of connecting with people. Together, Lloyd and Joy built a life rooted in family, service, and community involvement.
Today, their legacy continues through the Lloyd and Joy Johnston Family Endowment, reflecting the values they embodied throughout their lives and their lasting connection to the Shuswap community.
